International scam calls in the UK
Updated 2026-05-02
If you don't have friends, family, or business contacts in a country, an inbound call from that country code is almost always a scam, spam, or premium-rate trap. The most reported international scam prefixes targeting UK numbers are below.
High-risk country codes
+232 Sierra Leone, +252 Somalia, +371 Latvia, +675 Papua New Guinea, +247 Ascension, +355 Albania, and +234 Nigeria appear repeatedly in UK Wangiri (one-ring) scam reports. +1 calls from US area codes you don't recognise are also commonly used for spoofed 'tech support' and IRS-style scripts.
Network-level blocking
From 2025, UK networks are required to block more inbound international calls that spoof UK caller IDs. Some still slip through. Carrier-level apps (BT Call Protect, Sky Talk Shield, Virgin Spam Filter) help.
Red flags
- Single-ring missed calls from unfamiliar country codes
- Caller ID looks UK but voice quality and accent suggest overseas
- Automated message offering refunds, prizes, or compliance warnings
What to do
- Don't call back unfamiliar international numbers.
- Enable your network's spam-call blocking.
- Report patterns to WhoCalledMe.ai so others see warnings.
